NOw Available: The new single from Jon Chandler, "The Western Road"

Picture
I’ve had a road song percolating over the past few months, and after this busy time of holiday music, I sat down, grabbed a pen, picked up my guitar, and this spilled out.  A little travelogue, perhaps, but more a look at some of the places and people who have affected what I do.  It’s a year’s end song to me, so here’s my new single, The Western Road.

Jon Chandler: Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals.
Ernie Martinez: Dobro, BV.
Produced by Jon Chandler and Jim Ratts at Raven Studios, Denver, Colorado.

Mountains in the rear view like a shrine
Nothing finer than some windshield time
The blacktop’s lonely hum, well it’s all mine
Drivin’ down the Western Road

Radio’s been broken for so long
Can’t compete with that old highway song
Palo Duro’s pull is oh, so strong
Movin’ down the Western Road

A thousand memories, a thousand loves
Far horizons, azure sky above
The gravel groans, it’s you I’m thinking of
Goin’ down the Western Road

If you’re passing through old Santa Fe
Tell Johnny Boggs I sent you down his way
With my regards for all our escapades
Travelin’ down the Western Road

Given time, given space/given passion, given grace
All I want to do is see the place
That’s found down the Western Road

Nothing quite like the Dakota breeze
Mary sings just like a memory
Pure as Spring in all its finery
That opens up the Western Road

Cedars bordered this old, hallowed ground
Someone came along and cut them down
The ghosts still dance in this Nebraska town
Haunting the old Western Road

Old Costilla seems serene and calm
Chris and Rodney share their highway psalms
In a cantina filled with rights and wrongs
A few miles down the Western Road

Reno’s lights, they make the spirit soar
Sippin’ pican punch by the barn door
Follow the Truckee to Lake Almanor
Goin’ down the Western Road

Given time, given space/given passion, given grace
All I want to do is see the place
That’s found down the Western Road

Diesel pickups meet along the lane
Cowmen stop and talk of drought and rain
Floyd and Terry swapping poems again
Of life along the Western Road

Powder River running sleek and cold
Dusty bluffs and grass banked fishing holes
The Great Red Wall invites my very soul
To find it down the Western Road

Given time, given space/given passion, given grace
All I want to do is see the place
That’s found down the Western Road

Oh, I’ve got to go
To where I find/that mother lode
Down the Western Road
